CAJON PASS, Calif. (VVNG.com) — A 21-year-old man suspected of firing a handgun at a BNSF police officer from a moving train in the Cajon Pass was arrested Wednesday along with four alleged coconspirators.
Investigators with the Sheriff’s Rural Crime Task Force identified Angel Castro as the suspect accused of shooting at the BNSF officer during an attempted rail car burglary investigation Monday evening, Aug. 10, 2026.
An arrest warrant for attempted murder was issued for Castro as investigators continued working the case.
On Wednesday, Aug. 12, at about 4:30 p.m., Rural Crime Task Force investigators were conducting an operation in the Cajon Pass when, with assistance from the San Bernardino Police Department, they located Castro and four other suspects traveling in a vehicle in San Bernardino.
A traffic stop was conducted and all five men were detained. According to the Sheriff’s Department, investigators searched the vehicle and found tools used to burglarize trains.
Castro was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, cargo theft and conspiracy to commit a crime, according to a written statement from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.
The four other suspects were identified as Jorge Sarmiento Ochoa, 31; Miguel Humberto Grajeda Carrizos, 24; Jesus Jose Grajeda, 25; and Cesar Geovanny Grajeda Medina, 22.
Ochoa, Carrizos, Grajeda and Grajeda Medina were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy, cargo theft and possession of burglary tools.
The Sheriff’s Department identified all five suspects as Mexican nationals. All five were booked into the Central Detention Center and remained in custody as of the department’s Thursday morning update.
The arrests stem from an incident reported at about 6:04 p.m. Monday near Cajon Boulevard and Keenbrook Road in Devore.
Deputies with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department and California Highway Patrol officers responded to assist BNSF Railway Police after shots were reported in the area.
According to investigators, BNSF officers encountered people suspected of burglarizing rail cars and attempted to deter the activity. During the encounter, a suspect fired a handgun in the direction of a BNSF officer. The officer was not struck or injured.
The train continued northbound before eventually stopping in the Summit Valley area. Deputies and BNSF officers established a perimeter around the train while Sheriff’s Aviation and personnel from the Specialized Enforcement Division assisted with a search of rail cars believed to have been entered.
No suspects were found during the initial search. Several vehicles and people encountered in the surrounding area were investigated and determined to be unrelated to the incident.
No deputies or BNSF officers were injured. The Rural Crime Task Force has assumed the investigation, which remains ongoing.
