Suspect Fires Handgun Toward BNSF Officer During Rail Car Burglary Investigation In Cajon Pass
CAJON PASS, Calif. (VVNG.com) — Authorities are searching for a suspect who allegedly fired a handgun toward a BNSF Railway Police officer during an encounter with individuals suspected of burglarizing rail cars in the Cajon Pass on Monday evening.
At about 6:04 p.m. on August 10, 2026, San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputies and California Highway Patrol officers responded to assist BNSF Railway Police following a report of shots fired near Cajon Boulevard and Keenbrook Road, according to a written statement from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.
Authorities said BNSF officers encountered individuals suspected of burglarizing rail cars and attempted to deter the activity.
During the incident, a suspect fired a handgun in the direction of a BNSF officer, according to the Sheriff’s Department. The officer was not struck or injured.
The train continued northbound before eventually stopping in the Summit Valley area. Deputies and BNSF officers established a perimeter around the train.
With assistance from Sheriff’s Aviation and personnel from the Sheriff’s Specialized Enforcement Division, authorities searched rail cars believed to have been entered.
No suspects were located during the search. Several vehicles and individuals encountered in the surrounding area were investigated and determined to be unrelated to the incident, according to the department.
No deputies or BNSF officers were injured. The Sheriff’s Rural Crimes Task Force has assumed the investigation, which remains ongoing.
