Roof Damaged After Lightning Strikes Helendale Home Tuesday Night

VICTOR VALLEY, Calif. (VVNG.com) — Tuesday night’s unexpected thunderstorm delivered more than just booming thunder and quick rain, it also brought lightning strikes that damaged at least two homes in the Victor Valley.

In the Silver Lakes community of Helendale, resident Araceli Naranjo said lightning struck her home near Rivers Edge Drive and Lakeview Drive, causing visible damage to the roofline.

“The sound was very loud and it made my house shake,” Araceli told VVNG. “I was very scared but I didn’t go outside.”

The following morning, she inspected the area near her solar panel electrical box—located where the lightning had hit—and discovered the damage. A photo she shared shows shredded and charred insulation fibers hanging from scorched wood along the edge of her roof.

Despite the strike, Araceli said she did not lose power. She contacted the fire department, who advised that as long as there was no smoke or signs of electrical issues, there was no immediate concern. “From what we can see, the electrical panel seems to be fine,” she added.

Araceli, who has lived in her Helendale home for six years, said she has never experienced anything like this before, at this house or anywhere else she’s lived.

VVNG was also made aware of a second lightning strike that occurred the same night in Apple Valley, in the area of Jess Ranch Parkway and Apple Valley Road. According to preliminary reports, that home also sustained damage, and the fire department responded for a small fire believed to have been caused by the strike.

Tuesday night’s storm caught many residents off guard with a rapid combination of thunder, lightning, and a short downpour that lasted less than 10 minutes in most areas. The High Desert rarely sees direct lightning strikes on homes, making the two incidents particularly notable.

If Lightning Strikes Your Home:

  • Call 911 Immediately — even if there is no visible fire. Electrical fires can smolder behind walls or in the attic before becoming noticeable.
  • Check for Smoke or Burning Smell: Be alert to any strange smells or discolored outlets.
  • Do Not Touch Electrical Panels or Appliances until cleared by a professional.
  • Shut Off Main Breaker if you suspect a surge but only if it’s safe to do so.
  • Document the Damage — take photos for insurance purposes.
  • Call Your Utility Provider — they may send someone to inspect power lines and the meter.
  • Contact Your Insurance Company — even if damage appears minor, a claim may be necessary for repairs.
