APPLE VALLEY, Calif. (VVNG.com) — A fast-moving fire on the Fourth of July destroyed multiple apartments in the Town of Apple Valley, displacing several families and claiming the life of at least one dog.
The incident occurred at approximately 12:43 p.m. in the 20400 block of Sago Lane near Serrano and Wanaque Roads.
According to initial reports from firefighters on scene, heavy smoke and fire were visible from one unit and rapidly spread to nearby structures due to strong winds.
Emergency crews requested a second alarm response as the flames became well-established in a detached unit that included a garage.
During the firefight, a ruptured gas main prompted a life hazard alert, and nearby power lines collapsed, requiring an expedited response from Southern California Edison.
At least three units were destroyed in the blaze, though the total number of affected families has not yet been determined. One resident told VVNG the fire began as a small blaze in the corner unit but quickly intensified with the wind, consuming entire units within minutes.

The Apple Valley Fire Protection District is investigating the official cause of the fire. The American Red Cross responded to assist displaced residents.
