Woman Killed In Wednesday Night Hit-And-Run Crash On Sheep Creek Road In Phelan
PHELAN, Calif. (VVNG.com) — A woman was killed and a man was hospitalized following a two-vehicle hit-and-run crash Wednesday night in Phelan.
The crash was reported on May 20, 2026, at approximately 10:05 p.m. at the intersection of Sheep Creek Road and Dos Palmas Road in an unincorporated area of San Bernardino County.
California Highway Patrol officers from the Victorville Area office and personnel from the San Bernardino County Fire Department responded to the scene.
Emergency crews located a black Nissan Rogue overturned in the dirt shoulder just south of the intersection.
According to a written statement from the California Highway Patrol, the male driver was found outside of the vehicle, while a female passenger remained trapped inside. The woman was pronounced deceased at the scene by emergency personnel.
Investigators said the suspect vehicle, described as a white GMC 5500, fled the scene after the crash. The vehicle was later located abandoned in the desert, but the driver had fled in an unknown direction.
The male driver of the Nissan was transported to a hospital for further medical treatment.
The preliminary investigation revealed the Nissan was traveling southbound on Sheep Creek Road, north of Dos Palmas Road. The GMC was reportedly stopped within the southbound lane of Sheep Creek Road at the intersection when the collision occurred for reasons still under investigation.
The identity of the deceased woman has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.
Authorities said alcohol and drugs are currently considered unknown factors in the crash.

UPDATE: The San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased passenger as Aracelis Castaneda, a 79-year-old resident of Lancaster.
