WATCH: Video Shows Fireworks Being Launched From Dry Roadside Brush Along Southbound I-15 In Cajon Pass

CAJON PASS, Calif. (VVNG.com) — Two men were observed setting off fireworks in dry roadside vegetation along southbound Interstate 15 in the Cajon Pass on Sunday evening, according to multiple witnesses who watched the incident from passing vehicles.

The incident occurred at approximately 6 p.m. on Sunday, June 28, 2026, just south of the Cleghorn Road exit at a turnout along the right shoulder of southbound Interstate 15.

Witness photographs show the two men standing in dense roadside vegetation with what appears to be a black 2011 Ford Crown Victoria parked behind them in the brush beneath a canopy of mature trees and shrubs. The vehicle was partially concealed by vegetation.

The turnout is surrounded by dry grasses, weeds, mature shrubs, and dense brush that extend into the surrounding hillsides, where vegetation becomes highly combustible during the summer months.

One man is seen wearing a white sleeveless shirt and blue athletic shorts, while the other is shirtless and wearing dark-blue jeans and a white cowboy hat.

Photos and video captured by witnesses show the shirtless man holding what appears to be a tube-style fireworks launcher that emits smoke as fireworks are launched into the air. The second man is seen standing nearby with both arms raised as smoke drifts through the surrounding vegetation.

It is unknown whether the men have been contacted by the California Highway Patrol or any other law enforcement agency, and VVNG has not confirmed whether any arrests have been made in connection with the incident.

According to the San Bernardino County Fire Protection District, possession of any type of fireworks, including “safe and sane” fireworks, is prohibited in all unincorporated areas of San Bernardino County. Fire and law enforcement agencies are increasing enforcement efforts to protect public safety. Fines of up to $1,250 and possible arrest may apply for smuggling illegal fireworks.

If a fire results from the unsafe use of fireworks, those responsible could face criminal charges and be held liable for any resulting damages.
