VVNG’s Entertainment News for the 2nd Week of April

This past week, my Instagram, Facebook and Youtube were plastered with all things Star Wars… And I loved it. This year, Disney celebrated the 40th anniversary of Star Wars, in Florida, during its annual Star Wars Celebration. A convention where they drop all the latest news regarding TV shows, video games, graphic novels, toys, books and movies that have to do with the franchise juggernaut. Some of the highlights included:

A very touching tribute to Carrie Fisher/Princess Leia,

Here is the complete presentation where George Lucas, Kathleen Kennedy and Carrie Fisher’s daughter, Billie Lourd, talked about Carrie, and John Williams and his orchestra played Princess Leia’s theme at the end of the tribute. Oh, how I wish I was there.

The release of the first teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi along with this beautiful poster for the upcoming film,

The first look at Star Wars Battlefront 2, for all you gamers. It looks absolutely gorgeous,

And the announcement that a new female character will appear in The Last Jedi,

It was announced that Kelly Marie Tran, a Vietnamese American actress, was going to play “the biggest new part” in the Last Jedi. Of course they didn’t say everything about her character, only that her name is Rose, a maintenance worker for the Resistance and that “She’s not a soldier,” director Rian Johnson said. “She’s not looking to be a hero, and she gets pulled a very big way into an adventure in this movie with Finn [John Boyega].” This announcement was met with a very positive response from the internet. Especially from asian fans that said that they now have a female character that they can cosplay as and relate to.

Finally, this wasn’t from the actual celebration but it is still Star Wars related. Daisy Ridley and Mark Hamill tell us in the following video, how we can help two great causes and have the chance to win some pretty awesome prizes while we’re at it.

Josh Brolin has been cast to play the role of Cable, a fan favorite among comic book lovers, in the upcoming Deadpool 2 movie, another fan favorite among comic book lovers. Deadpool himself teased, in a post-credit scene of the first film, that Cable was going to come out in the sequel. Since then, there have been rumors about who was going to be the one to play the role. Among the ones rumored were Brad Pitt, Michael Shannon and Pierce Brosnan to name a few. Finally it has been confirmed that Mr. Brolin will indeed be Cable. Josh Brolin is already in the Marvel Universe, as Thanos so it will be interesting to see how Deadpool jokes about this in his next movie.

And in case you don’t know who the heck Cable is, this is what Wikipedia says about him:
Cable (Nathan Summers) is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics, most commonly in association with X-Force and the X-Men. Nathan Summers is the adult son of the X-Man Cyclops (Scott Summers) and Madelyne Pryor (Jean Grey’s clone), and the half brother of Rachel Summers, from a possible future timeline, having been transported as an infant to the future, where he grew into a warrior, before returning to the present.

In other casting news, Jude Law is going to be playing Dumbledore in the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them sequels. Fantastic Beasts is a prequel to the Harry Potter films and it is set about 70 years before the first HP flick. This will be a way younger version of the beloved headmaster of Hogwarts. What do you think of these casting choices?

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 is only a few weeks away and the director just announced that he will be back to finish off the trilogy, here’s what he wrote to his fans on Facebook:

“…I needed to know it was, in my heart, what I truly felt called to do. There is a history in Hollywood of haphazard endings to trilogies, and I didn’t want to become a part of that dishonorable tradition of pretending the third one doesn’t exist. I couldn’t do it for the money, and I couldn’t do it because it was what other people wanted me to do. I needed to do it because it was what I needed to do. I have never made choices in my career based on anything other than passion and love for the stories and characters, and I didn’t want to start now. So, yes, I’m returning to write and direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

In the end, my love for Rocket, Groot, Gamora, Star-Lord, Yondu, Mantis, Drax, and Nebula – and some of the other forthcoming heroes – goes deeper than you guys can possibly imagine, and I feel they have more adventures to go on and things to learn about themselves and the wonderful and sometimes terrifying universe we all inhabit. And, like in both Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, we will work on creating the story that goes beyond what you expect.
Much of what’s happened in the MCU for the past ten or so years has been leading, in a big way, to the Avengers’ Infinity War. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will happen after all that. It will conclude the story of this iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and help catapult both old and new Marvel characters into the next ten years and beyond. I will be working side-by-side with Kevin Feige and the gang to help design where these stories go, and make sure the future of the Marvel Cosmic Universe is as special and authentic and magical as what we have created so far.
I promise you, the fans, I’ll do it all with integrity and love and respect for the characters.”

You want realism? Go watch the news. This is the Fast and the Furious franchise. If by now you haven’t learned that these movies replace logic with whatever they think will please their passionate fan base, then (that’s kinda your fault and) you will probably not enjoy this flick. Now, I’m not saying that the whole flick is nothing but mindless fun. The filmmakers actually do a great job making the unbelievable as believable as possible in a film where humans have superhuman strength, enemies become BFFs as long as they make each other laugh, and one bald mechanic street racer is so dangerous that no one in the world can stop him. So if you don’t mind all that and you just want to watch fast cars being driven, crashed and blown up in a furious manner across the globe, then this is the full throttle action flick for you.

Atomic Blonde (July 28th 2017)
This movie looks absolutely awesome. The action looks really intense and realistic. I can’t wait for this flick, Charlize Theron is such a badass. You should definitely check this trailer out. Just be warned that is very R-rated.

Synopsis: Agent Lorraine Broughton (Charlize Theron) is equal parts spycraft, sensuality and savagery, willing to deploy any of her skills to stay alive on an impossible mission. Sent alone into Berlin to retrieve a priceless dossier from within the destabilized city, she partners with embedded station chief David Percival (James McAvoy) to navigate her way through a deadly game of spies.

The Hitman’s Bodyguard (August 18th 2017)
Samuel L Jackson and Ryan Reynolds star in what looks like a very hilarious action-comedy flick.

Synopsis: The world’s top protection agent is called upon to guard the life of his mortal enemy, one of the world’s most notorious hitmen. The relentless bodyguard and manipulative assassin have been on the opposite end of the bullet for years and are thrown together for a wildly outrageous 24 hours. During their journey from England to the Hague, they encounter high-speed car chases, outlandish boat escapades and a merciless Eastern European dictator who is out for blood.

Transformers: The Last Knight (August 11th 2017)
Another trailer for the 5th Transformer’s flick dropped and it has more scenes of Optimus being a meanie. What do you think of it?

Synopsis: Humans are at war with the Transformers, and Optimus Prime is gone. The key to saving the future lies buried in the secrets of the past and the hidden history of Transformers on Earth. Now, it’s up to the unlikely alliance of Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg), Bumblebee, an English lord (Anthony Hopkins) and an Oxford professor (Laura Haddock) to save the world.

Thor: Ragnarok (November 3rd 2017)
This trailer got me excited for this flick, it looks like it has loads of action packed entertainment.

Synopsis:Imprisoned on the other side of the universe, the mighty Thor (Chris Hemsworth) finds himself in a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), his former ally and fellow Avenger. Thor’s quest for survival leads him in a race against time to prevent the all-powerful Hela (Cate Blanchett) from destroying his home world and the Asgardian civilization.

Honestly, I have very little interest in watching Unforgettable, it kind of looks like a, big-budget, made for TV movie. But, who knows, maybe it will have enough suspense and drama to make it a good time at the movies. Free Fire completely flew under my radar. I barely saw a trailer for it and it looks very interesting. I’ll put the trailer below in case you haven’t heard about it either. Gifted is finally going to be playing up here in the desert. It was released April 7th but it is barely going to start playing in the Victor Valley, this Friday. Which of these movies are you checking out this weekend? Or are you just going to watch The Fate of the Furious again?

Unforgettable is rated- R and stars Rosario Dawson and Katherine Heigl

Synopsis: Barely coping with the end of her marriage, Tessa Connover learns that her ex-husband David is now happily engaged to Julia. Trying to settle into her new life, Julia believes she has finally met the man of her dreams, the man who can help her forget her troubled past. Soon, Tessa’s jealousy starts to consume her, and she will stop at nothing to turn Julia’s paradise into the ultimate nightmare.

Free Fire is rated- R and stars Bradley Cooper, Armie Hammer and Brie Larson

Synopsis:Justine brokers a meeting in a deserted warehouse between two Irishmen and a gang led by Vernon and Ord, who intend to sell them a stash of guns. But when shots fire during the handover, complete pandemonium ensues, with everyone at the scene suddenly thrust into a heart-stopping game of survival.

Gifted is rated- PG 13 and stars Captain America and Mckenna Grace

Synopsis: Frank Adler (Chris Evans) is a single man raising a child prodigy – his spirited young niece Mary (Mckenna Grace) – in a coastal town in Florida. Frank’s plans for a normal school life for Mary are foiled when the 7-year-old’s mathematical abilities come to the attention of Frank’s formidable mother, Evelyn (Lindsay Duncan), whose plans for her granddaughter threaten to separate Frank and Mary.

I’m going to cheat a little for this week’s recommendation. I suggest you watch, not one but, all three (there is no way in heck I am recommending the fourth) Indiana Jones films. We just finished the trilogy during movie night and I loved all three of the adventures Indy goes on. He is such a cool guy, he’s very smart and he always gets the ladies. Indiana Jones is definitely one of my favorite characters from the 80s and whether you’ve seen these movies or not, they are always a great choice when you are deciding what to watch.

The Indiana Jones Trilogy is rated PG-13 and stars Harrison Ford
