Victorville Task Force Confiscates 130 Pounds of Fireworks, Cites Four

VICTORVILLE, Calif. – The City of Victorville’s Task Force is keeping up with its promise to enforce, remove, and cite those caught using illegal fireworks.

“Last weekend, a City of Victorville Task force confiscated 130 pounds of fireworks, issued four citations and responded to 27 fireworks-related calls during sweeps to enforce the City’s ban on fireworks and to promote safety,” stated a Victorville City news release.

The task force, comprised of San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputies and officers from the City’s Code Enforcement and Animal Control Divisions, will conduct additional sweeps through July 4.

According to the release, the City authorized the task force in direct response to a recent increase in fireworks activity including a fire that occurred on June 15.

This fire, believed to have been caused by fireworks, consumed shrubs and trees at the corner of Amethyst and Luna and came dangerously close to neighboring homes. The damaged area is part of a City-maintained, landscape maintenance district. Damages are valued at $4,000, which includes the cost to remove the charred debris. Costs to replant like-type mature trees and plants are not contemplated at this time due to fiscal constraints of the landscape district.

In addition to the threat of fire, fireworks can also trigger episodes of post-traumatic stress disorder in some Veterans and cause extreme distress for pets. Residents of Victorville are asked to extend courtesy to each other, adhere to the Municipal Code, and refrain from using fireworks.

All fireworks, even those considered to be safe and sane, are illegal in the City of Victorville. Violators will be fined up to $1,000 and could receive up to six months in jail. The public is encouraged to report offenders by calling Victorville Police Dispatch at (760) 956-5001 and providing an address for responders to investigate. Dial 911 in the case of an emergency.

As an alternative, the public can enjoy the FREE Fireworks Show sponsored by the City of Victorville on July 4 planned for 9 p.m. at the San Bernardino County Fairgrounds located at 14800 7th St. in Victorville.
