HELENDALE, Calif. (VVNG.com) — Fire crews responded to a rapidly spreading vegetation fire Tuesday evening in Helendale that grew to approximately 10 to 15 acres before firefighters were able to stop its forward rate of spread.
According to a written statement from the San Bernardino County Fire Department, the first report came in at about 7:00 p.m. in the area of Jordan Road and Vista Road, near the Mojave River.
Medic Engine 4 arrived on scene reporting approximately 2 acres burning with a rapid rate of spread in heavy fuels. Battalion Chief 138 initially established incident command and requested a second alarm as the fire continued to grow.
Additional resources responded from CAL FIRE San Bernardino Unit, the Bureau of Land Management, and the Victorville Fire Department.
Authorities later reported the fire had reached about 10 acres, with the potential to expand to 30 acres, moving at a moderate rate of spread. Officials stated there was no immediate threat to structures.
Fire conditions were influenced by steady winds with gusts up to 20 mph, contributing to fire behavior.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department assisted with evacuating transients in the affected area.
At 8:40 p.m., incident command reported that forward progression had been stopped at approximately 10 to 15 acres.
Crews will remain on scene overnight due to current wind conditions and anticipated weather.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The next update is expected Wednesday morning unless conditions change significantly.
UPDATE – Per incident command, the fire’s size has been updated to 13.9 acres.
