VICTORVILLE, Calif. (VVNG.com) — Take me out to the ballgame! But how can you have a game at Victorville American Little League when there is no equipment? When Valley Hi Toyota in Victorville read the story in the Victor Valley News Group, they decided to step up to the plate. Several items were stolen from the league on September 29th. They’ve been playing with borrowed equipment since.
“I coached Little League for a long time and I know the feeling when games are canceled due to vandalism,” said Brian Ortega, Creative Director at Valley Hi Toyota. “They’re our local community neighbors and we wanted to find a way to help support the kids. I approached General Manager, Todd Stokes, and he agreed that we should contribute somehow.”
“It’s all about the kids and we want to be able to help them achieve their baseball and softball goals. I love baseball and I know kids love the game too,” said Todd Stokes.
It was announced on October 5th on Facebook Live that for the month of October, Valley Hi Toyota will donate $5 for every vehicle sold, new or pre-owned. The dealership averages 300-350 vehicles each month. The Toyota dealership made the announcement on Facebook live on Friday to a group of team members and the VVALL board members.
Minutes after, posts about the donation began to pour in on the live video. “$5!? That won’t even get them a case of Gatorade Let alone a batting glove!” $5 for every car you sell in the month of Oct… How sad if you sold 20 cars that would be only $100… You could do more than that… Just 1 bat could cost $100…”
Even more harsh comments were made elsewhere. But others were in support of the efforts, “Why are you guys judging about the price? Any little bit helps! Plus I’m sure they sell a lot of cars so it will add up quickly! Great job helping the community Valley Hi Toyota!”
James Stocker, a member of the board and the person who reached out to many businesses left this comment:
Valley Hi Toyota your generosity and the time you took to share our story is so greatly appreciated. We had reached out to several local companies and Valley Hi Toyota was only one of 2 that helped. They always are ready to give back to the community and we appreciate you…The league was only asking for assistance to replace the equipment. Valley Hi didn’t have to give us their time and share our story. Everyone has the opportunity to contribute through our GoFund Me acct. The last thing our league wanted was to give this great dealership a negative image. I hope everyone can see the whole picture and appreciate what they are doing for the league and this community. Thank you for wanting more for the kids. But please appreciate the good in someone’s intentions.
At the time, VVALL was hoping to reach $1,500 on their GoFund Me page, but since raised the amount in order give other people a chance to support.
“This is amazing! We’re so grateful,” said Jeannette Honnold, League President. “We truly appreciate you helping out. I just wanted to get our equipment back, but it looks like we’ll have some new stuff for Spring.” Read the article here about the stolen baseball equipment.
“We’re going to have a great October and sell a lot of cars. The more cars we sell, the more we’ll be able to get the kids back on the field in style,” said Stokes.
Stokes said he was hoping to bring more awareness and involvement throughout the month, unfortunately, they didn’t relay the fact that they sell quite a number of vehicles.
“I do appreciate all the support from other commenters. Hopefully, we can get the focus back towards the children and their equipment needs. Regardless, of the outcome are going to donate the $1500 anyway, we just wanted to keep awareness all month,” stated Stokes.
Victorville American League has set up a GoFund Me page to raise more funds. Every little bit helps. As of this writing, 15 people raised $520.
