SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY, Calif. (VVNG.com) — A tragic solo-vehicle rollover crash on Sunday, May 4, 2025, resulted in the deaths of one adult and three juveniles.
The crash occurred on westbound Interstate 40, near Hector Road, in unincorporated San Bernardino County.
At approximately 7:45 a.m., California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers from the Barstow Area responded to the scene, where they determined that a 35-year-old male driver from Yermo, was operating a 2012 Dodge Ram with three passengers — two males and one female.
The relationship between the driver and the juvenile passengers is not yet known.
According to CHP, the vehicle veered off the roadway to the right, entering the dirt shoulder and overturning multiple times.
Despite emergency responders’ efforts, all four occupants — the adult driver and three juveniles — were pronounced dead at the scene.
The San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office later identified one of the victims as 10-year-old Sailor A. Martinez, a resident of Barstow.
At this time, CHP officials have stated that alcohol and/or drugs are not believed to have played a role in the crash.
“We are saddened by the tragic loss of life and extend our deepest condolences to the families affected,” said CHP Barstow Area Lieutenant Adam Carmichall. “The California Highway Patrol urges all motorists to travel safely by ensuring your vehicle is in good mechanical condition, always wearing seat belts, carrying food and water in case of delays, and never driving while impaired, fatigued, or distracted.”
San Bernardino County Fire reported that this weekend, crews were kept busy responding to multiple traffic-related incidents along the I-15 and I-40 corridors.
Stations 53 in Baker, 32 in Needles, and 18 in Havasu Landing, along with other high desert stations, responded to numerous emergencies, putting in hundreds of miles over the weekend.
“Rainstorms complicated matters, hindering flying conditions for helicopter transport units, causing road washouts and other hazards,” stated San Bernardino County Fire officials. “Still, on several occasions airships were able to respond and provide quick transport.”
The incident remains under investigation, and anyone with information is encouraged to contact Officer S. Herrera at (760) 255-5900.
