Town of Apple Valley Establishes Citizen’s Oversight Committee for Potential Sales Tax Measure

APPLE VALLEY, Calif. (VVNG.com) — On Tuesday night, the Apple Valley Town Council voted to establish a Citizen’s Oversight Committee for Measure P, a proposed 1¢ sales tax measure that will be on the ballot this November 5, 2024.

If adopted by voters, this measure would generate approximately $9 million a year that can be used to support law enforcement, infrastructure, and other town services that may face cuts without additional revenue.

Measure P is more formally known as the Citizen’s Transactions and Use (Sales) Tax Revenue Measure.

The Measure P Oversight Committee will be tasked with ensuring transparency and accountability in the collection and expenditure of the tax revenue, should the measure pass. The committee will be composed of local residents who will oversee and review the usage of funds generated by the tax, ensuring that they are used in a manner consistent with the intentions stated in the measure.

The Committee Bylaws outline the structure, responsibilities, and operations of the Oversight Committee, including its composition, meeting frequency, and reporting obligations. The establishment of this committee is a proactive step by the Town Council to maintain public trust and ensure that the community has a voice in how these potential new funds are managed.

Apple Valley Mayor Scott Nassif stated, “We are committed to being transparent and accountable to our residents. The establishment of this oversight committee reflects our dedication to responsible governance and our desire to ensure that any additional revenue from this measure is used effectively and for the benefit of our community.”

The outcome of the November 5, 2024, election will determine whether the proposed sales tax measure will be implemented. If passed, the committee will begin its work in alignment with the new tax revenue collection cycle.
