Third person dies in Mariposa Road head-on crash, Victorville man charged with DUI and Manslaughter

HESPERIA, Calif. (VVNG.com) — A 45-year-old man was arrested for vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated after a head-on collision that claimed the life of three people and left another with major injuries Tuesday afternoon in the City of Hesperia.

On February 20, 2024, at approximately 3:42 p.m., deputies from the Hesperia Station and rescue personnel from the San Bernardino County Fire Department responded to a traffic collision on Mariposa Road, just south of Mesquite Street.

Upon arrival, deputies determined Pavlo (AKA Pablo) Padilla, a resident of Victorville, was driving a black 2016 Chevrolet Suburban north on Mariposa Road.

Pedro Valencia-Perez, 58, a resident of Barstow, was driving a blue 2005 Toyota Corolla south on Mariposa Road with three passengers.

Sheriff’s officials said Padilla drove north onto the south lane of Mariposa Road and collided head-on with the Toyota. Both involved vehicles sustained major damage as a result of the crash.

Despite life-saving measures, Valencia-Perez and one of his passengers identified as Jose Valencia-Saucedo, 22, a resident of Barstow, sustained fatal injuries at the scene.

A second passenger identified as Rosa Saucedo-Negrete, 59, a resident of Barstow, was later pronounced deceased at a regional trauma center.

The third passenger of the Toyota, Francisco Valencia-Saucedo, 21, a resident of Barstow sustained major injuries.

“Based on the preliminary investigation, it appears drugs and/or alcohol were a factor in this crash,” stated sheriff’s officials.

Pavlo “Pablo” Padilla received serious injuries and was arrested, pending charges for PC 191.5 (a) – Vehicular Manslaughter While Intoxicated and CVC 23153 (a)/(b) – Felony DUI Causing Injury/Death.

Mariposa Road between Joshua Street and Ranchero Road was closed for several hours while deputies from the Hesperia Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) processed the scene.

Anyone with information or who may have witnessed the collision are urged to contact Deputy Deputy F. Zavala, Deputy J. Deberg, or Sergeant B. Motley at the Hesperia Station.
