Teen Attempts ‘Suicide by Cop’ in Barstow

BARSTOW:( A 19-year-old Barstow man that attempted ‘suicide by cop’ was arrested.

The incident occurred on Friday, September 11, 2015, at approximately 2:30 a.m, when Deputy C. Korkotsakis located a black male adult, later identified as Cody Ballard, sitting in the middle of Barstow Road near Rimrock Road.

According to authorities, Ballard appeared disoriented and began running in the middle of the roadway. Deputy Korkotsakis ordered Ballard out of the roadway however Ballard continued to walk southbound in the middle of traffic. Ballard placed his hand in his waistband telling the deputy he had a gun and wanted to be shot. Ballard eventually displayed both his hands however continued to taunt Korkotsakis to shoot him.

Prior to Korkotsakis’ arrival Ballard told a witness when law enforcement arrived he was going to attempt to get the Deputy to shoot him.

Ballard was taken into custody and was transported to the High Desert Detention Center for public intoxication, and a psychological evaluation.
