Suspicious Civil War-Era Cannonballs Prompt Temporary Closure of Apple Valley Police Station

APPLE VALLEY, Calif. (VVNG.com) — Apple Valley Police Department temporarily closed its station Thursday morning after a resident brought in what he believed were Civil War-era cannonballs that appeared to contain fuses and could potentially be explosive.

The incident occurred on February 12, 2026, at approximately 8:51 a.m. at the police station located at 14931 Dale Evans Parkway in Apple Valley.

According to a written statement, a local resident brought the items to the station for evaluation. Upon inspection, personnel determined the objects appeared to contain fuses and may have posed an explosive risk.

Out of an abundance of caution, station personnel immediately implemented safety protocols, contacted the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department – Bombs and Arson Division, and established a safety perimeter around the building. The station was temporarily closed to the public while authorities assessed the situation.

Specialists from the Bombs and Arson Division responded promptly and safely took possession of the items for proper disposal.

There were no injuries reported, and officials stated that at no time was there an immediate threat to the public beyond the controlled perimeter.

The Apple Valley Police Department reminded residents that if potentially explosive or military ordnance is discovered, it should not be handled or transported. Instead, individuals should leave the item in place and contact law enforcement immediately.
