SR-138 Remains Closed in Both Directions After Christmas Eve Storm Causes Road Damage

CAJON PASS, Calif. (VVNG.com) — State Route 138 remains closed in both directions following significant storm damage caused by heavy rainfall on Christmas Eve, according to a written statement from the California Highway Patrol.

The closure spans from Interstate 15 to Summit Valley Road and from the junction of SR-2 to Cajon Boulevard on the Phelan side.

CHP officials said the highway suffered flooding and partial washouts, prompting a full closure with no estimated time of reopening.

The closure affects access through the Cajon Pass and Phelan areas, disrupting travel for many residents and holiday visitors. Officials continue to monitor the damage and have not provided a timeline for repairs.

SR-173 remains open and is currently the only viable route to reach Silverwood Lake. However, drivers are urged to use caution as minor flooding has been reported in some areas along that route.

According to Silverwood Lake State Recreation Area, access is available via SR-173 and Crestline, but “RVs and trailers are not recommended to travel SR-138 from Crestline to Silverwood.” The park also confirmed that it sustained damage during the storm, and “the courtesy docks are not usable at this time.” Additional rain is forecasted, and visitors are advised to plan accordingly.

The Flood Watch issued by the U.S. National Weather Service San Diego California remains in effect through 4 p.m. today, December 26.

Motorists are strongly advised to avoid SR-138 and to follow detour signs or use alternate routes until further notice.
