Semi Hauling 42,000 Pounds of Bananas Catches Fire

NIPTON, Calif. (VVNG.com) A semi hauling 42,000 pounds of bananas caught fire along the 15 freeway Sunday night, authorities confirmed.

At approximately 11:27 pm, dispatch received reports of a semi truck fire along the right shoulder of the northbound I-15 near the Yates Well Road offramp.

The California Highway Patrol incident logs reported the driver was out of the semi and was attempting to put out the fire using an extinguisher.

The fire prompted a full closure of all northbound lanes, per CHP logs.

Upon arrival, San Bernardino County Firefighters located the tractor-trailer fully engulfed.

According to Public Information Officer Ryan Vacarro, the fire was knocked down by 12:38 a.m. and there was no hazards or vegetation involved.

As of 12:46 am only one lane had reopened while the other lanes will remain closed until Caltrans clear the trailer and it’s bananas out of the roadway.
