RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. (VVNG.com) — Authorities are investigating a second in-custody death at the West Valley Detention Center, after a 45-year-old Fontana man was found unresponsive early Monday morning, just one day after a similar incident at the same facility.
According to a written statement from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, the incident occurred on April 20, 2026, at approximately 5:28 a.m., when deputies assigned to the jail discovered an inmate, identified as Alexis Moron Ledinich, unresponsive.
Deputies and jail medical staff “immediately initiated lifesaving measures,” according to the statement. Personnel from American Medical Response and the Rancho Cucamonga Fire Department responded and “continued resuscitation efforts.” Despite those efforts, Ledinich was pronounced deceased.
The Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division – Homicide Detail responded to the location and has assumed the investigation.
Authorities said Ledinich was originally arrested and booked at the West Valley Detention Center on June 19, 2025, by the Fontana Sheriff’s Station for several crimes, including a charge of PC 273.6.
“Ledinich did not have obvious signs of trauma,” officials stated. His cause and manner of death will be determined following an autopsy.
This marks the second in-custody death reported at the facility within two days. On April 19, 2026, Mariel Mays, a 26-year-old Adelanto man, was also found unresponsive and later pronounced deceased at the same detention center.
The investigation into Ledinich’s death remains ongoing, and no additional information has been released.
