PHELAN-(VVNG.com): The San Bernardino County Fire Department will be presenting an award to a young hero that saved his and his grandmother’s lives during a November 7th house fire.
The award will be presented to 5-year-old Nathaniel Stocks on Monday, November 9th at 1:30 p.m. to at San Bernardino County Fire Department Station 10 located at 9625 Beekley Road in Phelan.
Just before 1:00 a.m. on Saturday Stocks awoke coughing from the smoke and noticed the fire burning in his room. When Stocks awoke to the fire, he sprung into action crawling beneath the smoke and up the hallway to alert his grandmother. Firefighters were able to rescue their Chihuahua, who was hiding in the bathroom and save most of the home.
This fire occurred just two days after Stocks went to a firehouse visit for a school field trip at the San Bernardino County Fire Department Station 10 in Phelan. At the field trip firefighters  gave the children a station tour and taught them lessons on fire safety. These lessons according to the Fire Department officials included “Stop, Drop and Roll”, EDITH drills, (Exit Drills in the Home) and when to call 911.
Preliminary investigation determined the origin to be a space heater placed too close to combustible materials.
