San Bernardino County awarded $99 million for key flood control projects including Hesperia
HESPERIA, Calif. (VVNG.com) — San Bernardino County has secured a significant $99 million boost from a new federal water bill, partially funding four crucial flood control projects.
The Water Resources Development Act (WRDA), which reauthorizes funding for the Army Corps of Engineers, supports major water infrastructure efforts. The bill, H.R. 8812, received bipartisan approval in the House of Representatives on July 22. Besides the financial backing, the legislation mandates the Army Corps to carry out extensive feasibility studies on three county projects.
“Flood control infrastructure is critical for safeguarding the lives and properties of our residents,” said Board of Supervisors Chairman and Third District Supervisor Dawn Rowe. “We deeply appreciate our federal lawmakers for their support, enabling us to complete these essential projects. This federal investment is a long-term benefit for our region.”
Congresswoman Norma Torres (D-Pomona) secured $24 million for the Magnolia Storm Drain Project, which aims to install 6,500 feet of drainpipe in Chino and Ontario to mitigate local flooding.
Congressman Jay Obernolte (R-Big Bear City) endorsed a $35 million water system rehabilitation project in Cedar Glen. This comprehensive project will replace existing pipes, upgrade an aging reservoir, and repair a water conveyance tunnel to enhance reliability and water quality.
Additionally, Obernolte supported an Army Corps feasibility study for the Bandicoot Flood Control Basin, intended to shield the City of Hesperia from flooding.
Congressman Pete Aguilar (D-Redlands) advocated for several county initiatives, securing $20 million for a comprehensive storm drain project in Bloomington. He also championed feasibility studies for the Rialto Channel and the Del Rosa Channel in the City of San Bernardino.
The WRDA bill passed the House with a 359-13 vote on July 22 and is currently pending in the Senate. Lawmakers remain optimistic that a final version of the WRDA bill will pass by the end of the year.
