APPLE VALLEY: S.H.O.C.K. was created by AVPAL in 2007. It was created due to a need for a juvenile intervention program in the Town of Apple Valley.

The S.H.O.C.K. program is a ten week juvenile intervention program for youth between the ages of thirteen and seventeen. S.H.O.C.K. was designed to combat the negative influences facing todays youth in society. These influences include, drugs, gangs, teenage pregnancy, communication issues with peers and parents, and self-respect.

S.H.O.C.K. is held three nights a week for a ten week period. The evening classes consist of approximately one and a half hours of physical activity (close order drill / physical fitness) and one and a half hours of classroom instruction. The physical activity is designed to promote teamwork and improve impulse control. The classroom portion is taught by S.H.O.C.K. staff and speakers from the community. Speakers have included doctors, detectives, members of the San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office, Apple Valley Gang Unit, San Bernardino County Probation and Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

The program is a cooperative effort among several different public safety entities within the County of San Bernardino and teaches teenagers the skills to be a successful part of the community.

Students will go to the Adelanto Detention Center, and to the Victorville Courthouse in an effort to educate them on the consequences associated with negative behavior.

As a part of the S.H.O.C.K. program, the S.H.O.C.K. staff will teach the mandatory “Parent Project” to parents and guardians throughout the course of the program. This equips parents and guardians with additional useful tools that have proven to be useful for effective parenting for now and in the future.

AVPAL has successfully completed 13 S.H.O.C.K. classes.

S.H.O.C.K. meets Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at The Phoenix Academy (Formerly Vista Campana Middle School) from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tutoring for S.H.O.C.K. students is offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

This program is for Apple Valley residents or students of the Apple Valley School District only.
