Principal Sentenced to 1 Year For Sexual Relationship With Teen

VICTORVILLE-(  A man entrusted to the care of the Barstow STEM Academy students, Former Principal Mark Hassell will serve one year in a county jail for his sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student.

This conviction and sentencing came over a year after Hassell was arrested in January 2015 when school officials became aware of his ongoing sexual relationship with a 17-year-old female student.

Although Hassell faced up to seven years and eight months in prison for the original charges, which included four counts of oral copulation of a minor, two counts of sodomy with a minor and two counts of statutory rape a plea deal dropped all but one of those charges.

On Wednesday, March 30th, Hassell pleaded no contest to only one count of oral copulation of a minor and was sentenced to one year and five years probation. Sentencing also included mandatory registration as a sex offender and Hassell must stay away from the victim.

Hassell, who remained out on bail throughout his court hearings, is eligible for work release and must report to the probation office by April 13th and to the county jail by April 29th.
