Police ID mother and father murdered in triple shooting, suspect arrested

ADELANTO, Calif. (VVNG.com) — Authorities have identified a mother and father shot and killed during a triple shooting Sunday morning in Adelanto.

On Sunday, February 23, 2020, at 8:28 a.m. deputies responded to a shooting at a home in the 11500 block of Chamberlaine Way in Adelanto.

When first responders arrived they found three people, two men, and one woman, suffering from gunshot wounds.

The female victim identified as, 59-year-old Rosa Mendoza, was pronounced deceased at the scene, her husband, Pedro Espinoza, 59, was rushed to a hospital and was pronounced deceased upon arrival.

The third victim, a 33-year-old man reported to be the couple’s nephew, was also shot and transported to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Witnesses told VVNG other family members, including two young adults, escaped the home by climbing through a window and running down the street. Officials confirmed there were other people in the home at the time of the shooting that were not injured.

Sheriff’s Homicide Detectives responded to conduct the investigation and identified, Gerson Sagastume, 27, as the suspect and a warrant was authored for his arrest.

At about 8:00 pm., deputies from the Specialized Enforcement Division (SED) assisting with the investigation located the suspect hiding in an abandoned residence in Adelanto.

Sagastume was transported to the Victor Valley Sheriff’s Station and interviewed by Homicide Investigators. At the conclusion of the interview, Sagastume was booked at the High Desert Detention Center for PC 187; Murder.

His bail is set at $1 Million and is scheduled for arraignment in a Victorville courtroom on February 25, 2020.

People familiar with the incident told VVNG the suspect is the male victim’s stepson through another marriage. The couple were dedicated members of a local church and described as kind-hearted and always happy.

Sheriff’s officials said the motive remains under investigation and no additional information would be released at this time.
