Pilot Fire: Apple Valley Schools Closed on Tuesday

APPLE VALLEY, Calif :(VVNG.com)- All schools, programs and offices within Apple Valley Unified School District will be closed on Tuesday, Aug. 9 in light of the poor air quality caused by the Pilot Fire.
On the morning of Aug. 8, AVUSD made the decision to remain open after working with local fire officials, monitoring air quality on airnow.gov, and driving through the entire district to assess potential impact. Schools were instructed to limit time students and staff spent outdoors, provide indoor areas for students at all times and to monitor symptoms such as coughing and shortness of breath.
As the day progressed, wind patterns shifted and the local air quality deteriorated. After assessing the current conditions and the likelihood of similar wind patterns for tomorrow, AVUSD has made the decision to close all schools and offices on Tuesday, Aug. 9.
At this time, we plan to reopen on Wednesday. Please monitor www.avusd.org for updates.
We know that this may pose a hardship to many families, however in the interest of the health of our students and staff, school will be closed tomorrow. We encourage everyone to stay indoors and we thank you for your patience as we work together to ensure the safety of our students.
