UPDATE 11/15 @ 9 AM – The San Bernardino Coroners has identified the deceased as 46-year-old Stacey Howard, a resident of Victorville. Paramedics arrived and pronounced Howard dead at the scene at 5:52 PM.
VICTORVILLE, Calif: (VVNG.com) A pedestrian was struck and killed when he attempted to cross a dark roadway on Monday evening.
The accident occurred around 5:40 p.m. on Amargosa Road., between Dakota Street and Midtown Road, just north of the Winco grocery store.
According to a witness on the scene, the driver of the involved van was traveling southbound on Amargosa Road, and the witness was driving northbound on Amargosa Road when she noticed the male pedestrian attempting to cross the busy roadway.
“I saw the van coming and the (driver) didn’t see the pedestrian and when he finally did notice him, he swerved to avoid him, they ended up darting the same way then he hit him,” stated the woman who wished to remain anonymous, “It was an accident, it was horrible.”
The witness attempted CPR on the victim while being instructed by a 911 operator until sheriff officials arrived.
The male pedestrian was not in a marked crosswalk at the time of the impact. He is described as wearing dark clothing, with a dark complexion and believed to have been in his 30’s, according to the witness.
The driver of the van was handcuffed and placed in the back of a patrol unit on the scene for driving without a license.
The pedestrian was pronounced deceased on scene.
Amargosa Road will remain closed for several hours between Midtown Drive and Dakota Street while deputies conduct their investigation.
