Opinion: Time to consider adding a new on/off-ramp to the I-15 between Victorville and Hesperia

VICTORVILLE, Calif. (VVNG.com) — The last couple of powerful winter storms in 2019, created chaos in the Cajon Pass that resulted in hundreds of motorists becoming stranded for hours along the I-15 freeway in the Victor Valley.

I think it’s time we discuss adding a new on/off-ramp along the I-15 between Hesperia and Victorville.

The Cajon Pass continues to remain a major issue for our region as we experience almost weekly events that cause a nightmare for commuters trying to make their way down the pass.

Below are the current distances between exits on the southbound I-15:

-Palmdale Road to Nisqualli Road is approx. 1.8 miles

-Nisqualli Road to Bear Valley Road is approx. 1.4 miles

-Bear Valley to Main Street is approx. 4.2 miles

-Main Street to Joshua is approx. 2.7 miles

-Highway 395 to Ranchero Road is approx. 2.2 miles

-Ranchero Road to Oak Hills Road is approx. 2.5 miles

I would propose constructing a new on/off-ramp at Mesa Street in Victorville. This new exit could potentially connect the I-15 all the way down to US Highway 395 to the west and create a new intersection at Mariposa Road to the east.

-Bear Valley Road to Mesa Street is approximately 1.9 miles.

-Mesa Street to Main Street is approx. 2.3 miles.

Adding a new on/off-ramp at Mesa Street would create a new exit between the longest stretch of exits on the I-15 between Victorville and Hesperia.

This would create a great option for when motorists are stranded and unable to exit the freeway for hours due to a major incident in the Cajon Pass.
