MOVIE REVIEW: Sing Truly Shines Whenever It’s Not Being Dragged Down By Its Slow Tempo

(VVNG.com)- Quick! What’s the main purpose of an animated flick?… Yup! To entertain the kiddos… and this movie excels at doing just that. I took my niece and nephew (Kamilah and Luca) to go watch this musically colorful movie and they absolutely loved it.  They were laughing at the silliness, they were moving their feet to the beat of the music, they were drinking all of my slushie, they were happy! And that made ME happy, because I can keep being the #bestuncleever. However I hate to be a grump and shatter their little hearts but I thought that the movie was good but not great. I really enjoyed how fast paced and creative the animation was. I liked some of the characters and was rooting for them but other characters were downright scummy and shady. The movie is an 1 hour and 40 minutes long but it felt like it was well over 2 hours because of how slow it got sometimes.

There are quite a few sequences in the flick that are fast paced and that do a great job of introducing all of the characters with a series of interconnected shots. The animation is done really well and doesn’t look cheap. The 3D upcharge is worth it but not really necessary. I really lost interest about halfway through the movie because of how slow paced it got. Sometimes the action or music parts were so fast paced and fun that it really made the slow parts feel almost boring. I would have loved it if they just kept the pace more even but, again, I did enjoy a lot of the movie.

I give Sing, The “Checky™ Sticker Of Tolerance!” The voices for all the animals are perfect. Most of the performances at the final show are really fantastic (I especially liked it when the pigs performed). There are some pretty new and creative ways they used in the animation that I thought were really cool. Like I said the kiddos will love this flick and the adults will most likely enjoy it and find it cute. I don’t think anyone will hate it or anything but it’s not the best animated movie ever and it kind of feels like a Zootopia wannabe. As if the makers of this flick got the idea for this after seeing a commercial for Zootopia followed by a commercial for The Voice or American Idol. I say you could wait to rent this one but if you are competing in the parent of the year awards, going to watch this in theaters, will definitely get you major brownie points from your little ones.

So, what did you think of Sing? Do you agree or disagree with me? Which flick are you checking out this week? What is your favorite animated movie of all time? Let me know in the comments below. Have a great day at the movies and don’t forget to save me some popcorn.

Official Synopsis:

In a world populated by human-like animals, a koala named Buster Moon (voiced by Matthew McConaughey) runs a beloved, once-grand theater, that has fallen on hard times. With the help of his sheep friend Eddie (John C. Reilly), Buster decides to raise money to keep the theater from being shut down, and holds the world’s greatest singing competition.

He distributes flyers far and wide, and a large number of singing hopefuls dream of winning, including unappreciated stay-at-home mother pig Rosita (Reese Witherspoon), a gorilla named Johnny (Taron Egerton) who doesn’t want to follow his father’s criminal footsteps, and a shy young elephant named Meena (Tori Kelly), whose biggest fan is her grandpa.
