MOVIE REVIEW: Freaky, Creepy, Eerie Us

VVNG- After watching the trailer for this flick about a family being attacked by another family that looks exactly like them, I was terrified. I honestly didn’t even want to go to sleep that night because I was so sure that I was going to have nightmares. Since then, I was kind of dreading going to watch this movie in theaters. I was fully prepared to get home afterward and cover up all of my mirrors so I didn’t have to worry about looking at myself and getting freaked out about the possibility of all of a sudden attacking myself. Alas, the movie itself, although super clever and highly entertaining, is not nearly as scary as I was expecting. It didn’t feel like I was watching a hardcore horror flick. It felt more like I was just enjoying an episode of The Twilight Zone, that was full of humor, intelligence, suspense, and of course, a terrific twist-ending.

I give Us, the “Checky™ Seal of Approval!” This film almost didn’t receive the Seal because it leaves TONS of questions unanswered, some of the events are a bit illogical, there are more than a few plot holes, and it almost always cuts away from the violence. I mean, I am no sadist, but the movie is rated-R so, might as well go all out. Having said that, the movie has fantastic performances by everyone involved (especially Lupita Nyong’o), clever and witty dialogue, an intriguing and original premise, a delightfully eerie soundtrack and musical score, and a twist ending that you will enjoy even more on multiple viewings. It is also packed with social commentary. Most of which, I honestly didn’t get until I saw some YouTube videos that explained everything in a way that my simple mind could comprehend.

Go enjoy this thrilling flick that you, me… Heck!… all of US (ha) can enjoy (except for the little ones, of course) before someone spoils it for you. Just lower your expectations, because it is not a masterpiece or anything like that. It is simply a very enjoyable and original movie that you will be thinking about long after you watch it. Your thoughts on it might not all be positive, but it will be fun to share them with your friends, your family, AND yourself if the events of this movie ever come true.

What did you think of Us? Do you agree or disagree with me? Which flick are you checking out this week? Let me know in the comments below. Have a great day at the movies and don’t forget to save me some popcorn.
