VVNG- We all have that one dad, who is best friends with our stepdad, that often comes over with our new stepmom and stepsister, who is, btw also a stepdaughter to our dad because she has her own dad that doesn’t like OUR dad and doesn’t try to hide his feelings, not even in front of our grandpa and step-grandpa, and when everyone comes together, shenanigans quickly ensue and…. Wait… What?… Is nobody in that situation? Oh, well I guess it’s only possible in a movie like this then. A movie filled with lots of improbable scenarios, wacky comedy and a lack of realism. Even though the movie drags a bit, some of the cast is really bad and the silliness is sometimes cringe-worthy, Daddy’s Home 2 has enough humor and heart to prevent this winter movie from going completely cold.
I give Daddy’s Home 2, the “Checky™ Sticker of Tolerance!” It’s sad that the filmmakers relied too much on the physical comedy. I thought the goofy scenes where people get hurt were kind of lame. The actress that plays Mark Wahlberg’s wife (Alessandra Ambrosio) acted really bad and her character is not likable at all. And don’t get me started on the little girl that plays Ambrosio’s daughter, I know she is only a child but she is VERY bratty and unpleasant. I can guarantee you that this movie is not going to win any awards or become a Christmas classic, but it definitely made me LOL more than a few times and (almost) everyone in the cast is great. Mel Gibson stood out to me as a hilarious and perfect contrast to the lovable John Lithgow. Will Ferrell and Marky Mark are always a great duo. The dialogue made me laugh the most and there are some very sweet moments in the movie that make it worth checking out.
This flick might not be the same as the best gift you would find under your Christmas tree, but it’s at least equivalent to a nice little stocking stuffer you can enjoy after all the better stuff is already unwrapped. So, I say leave your sleigh in the garage and wait for this flick to come out on home video. You are sure to have a good time if you let this living, breathing, and super confusing, family tree bring you a little joy regardless of whether you decide to ignore or embrace its (many) flaws.
So, what did you think of Daddy’s Home 2? Do you agree or disagree with me? Which flick are you checking out this week? Let me know in the comments below. Have a great day at the movies and don’t forget to save me some popcorn.
