VVNG- Let me start by answering the question everyone has on their mind… YES!… Will Smith is great as The Genie. He is able to portray the magical being in a flamboyant, energetic, and comical manner. Besides him, everything else in the flick is also very enjoyable, very colorful, and full of daring adventure, wonderful music, sweet romance, and enough comedy and excitement to keep you and your kiddos highly entertained.
This movie isn’t a diamond in the rough, it is an obviously gorgeous gem that you and your whole family can enjoy, especially if you go into it with an open mind and the realization that this will NOT be EXACTLY the same as the animated Disney classic. It is, however, very similar and just as musically magical as the original.
I give Aladdin, the “Checky™ Seal of Approval!” Don’t let the power of nostalgia ruin your enjoyment of this wonderful movie. You have to understand that this is not the animated version of Aladdin, Robin Williams does not come out, and they do not include EVERY SINGLE LITTLE THING that is in the cartoon. If you want a shot for shot remake of the Disney classic, then you might as well watch the Disney classic. Having said that, this live-action version sticks very closely to the original.
There are very few additions and changes (characters, songs, and sequences) to the story, and they all work very well. The sets, costumes, and locations are all beautiful. The comedy is funny enough to make your whole family laugh. The romance is sweet and believable. The actors are all charismatic and attractive, and the music and dance numbers are spectacular and perfectly choreographed.
You should definitely leave your “Robin Williams is better” mentality at home, hop on your magic carpet (or non-magical mode of transportation) and take your whole family to watch this dazzling film, so you can all be charmed together by this whole new world of magic, wonders, and music.
