Mayor’s Weight Loss Challenge returns to Apple Valley in 2020

Apple Valley, CA — In February, the Town will launch the fourth edition of its Mayor’s Weight Loss Challenge since the program began in 2015. The 2020 competition will encourage heart-healthy diet and exercise in connection with Heart Month.

Under the umbrella of the Town’s Healthy Apple Valley Program, the Mayor’s Weight Loss Challenge was the first community-wide weight-loss challenge to come to Apple Valley. It has helped more than 500 people write their own health success story.

“The Mayor’s Weight Loss Challenge has encouraged hundreds of Apple Valley residents,” said Mayor Scott Nassif.

“This year’s healthy heart edition is very personal to me as well, having survived a serious heart condition three years ago. I’m pleased to make this a community focus in 2020.”

The community campaign will ramp up about the same time as most individual new year’s resolutions begin to lose energy. To spur the contestants onto victory, the Mayor will lead the program with the first official weigh-in on Feb. 4, followed by a kick-off event on Feb. 15, which will include another weigh-in opportunity. This challenge will also include monthly walks, hikes, and other fitness events at various parks throughout Town. Participants can register online at

Sponsors, including medical providers and health gyms, are encouraged to join the Town in helping participants get heart healthy, lose weight and earn prize money. Results and winners will be determined based on a total percentage of weight lost.

A Facebook group will keep members on track for monthly weigh-ins, upcoming events, and healthy recipes to try. Among other scheduled activities, members are invited to try out lap swimming for free at the Town’s Aquatic Center, and several participants will have the chance to win monthly passes for lap swimming and water fitness classes.

Please watch the Town’s website and event Facebook page for event updates and added sponsors.  For more information or to sponsor, contact the Apple Valley Recreation Department at (760) 240-7880.
