Man’s Leg Amputated After Being Struck by Drunk Driver; GoFundMe Launched to Help Purchase Accessible Vehicle

APPLE VALLEY, Calif. (VVNG.com) — A Lucerne Valley man sustained serious injuries, including a severed leg and a broken spine, after being struck by a drunk driver while attempting to jump-start his disabled vehicle in Apple Valley.
The incident occurred at approximately 7:15 p.m. on December 15, 2024, at the intersection of Bear Valley and Deep Creek Roads.
Dean William, 43, was at the trunk of his 2006 Chrysler 300 when a 2024 Hyundai Elantra struck his vehicle from behind.

Dean was pinned in between the vehicles and his leg was amputated on site. He was subsequently transported to a trauma center for medical treatment.
At the time of the accident, William’s wife, Jessica, was seated inside the vehicle. She opted not to seek medical attention to prioritize her husband’s care.
The 29-year-old driver of the Hyundai, Rebecca Elizabeth Black, a resident of Apple Valley, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, with a special allegation of causing great bodily injury.

During her arraignment hearing in San Bernardino County Superior Court, she pleaded not guilty to the charges, and bail was set at $350,000.
In response to the incident, the victim’s daughter-in-law, Alexis Marie, established a GoFundMe account to assist the couple in securing a reliable vehicle adapted for their needs and to make their home more accessible after Dean is released from the hospital.
Alexis reported that her father-in-law remains in intensive care and may require up to ten additional surgeries.

“He will be in the hospital for Christmas, so even if you can’t donate, a prayer for his recovery is all we ask,” she said.
