UPDATE: Victorville Fire That Left Man Severely Burned May Have Been Accidental

VICTORVILLE, Calif. (VVNG.com) — A man who suffered severe burn injuries after being found on fire near Kohl’s in Victorville Monday evening may have been involved in an accidental fire, according to updated information released by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

The incident was reported at about 7:35 p.m. on March 30, 2026, along Amargosa Road near the area of Bear Valley Road and Dunia Road, where video previously shared with VVNG showed a large fire burning near an electrical box surrounded by bushes.

Deputies responded after receiving multiple reports of a male subject fully engulfed in flames, according to a written statement from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

Upon arrival, deputies located a 35-year-old male transient from Hesperia suffering from severe burns. The man was airlifted by Mercy Air to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Victorville City Fire personnel also responded to the incident and requested the air ambulance, which landed in a nearby field between Kohl’s and Walmart.

Witnesses at the scene previously told VVNG they believed the man was homeless and described the area where the fire occurred as a possible encampment.

Several bystanders stopped to render aid before emergency crews arrived, with some using a fire extinguisher in an attempt to put out the flames.

One witness described the severity of the injuries, saying the man’s skin was “falling off” as he screamed for help.

During the investigation, deputies located items consistent with combustible materials, and a preliminary determination suggests the fire may have been accidental, according to a written statement from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

Investigators from the department’s Arson/Bomb Detail responded to assist, and a San Bernardino County arson investigator is conducting a parallel investigation.

The investigation remains ongoing, and no additional information has been released.
