Man, 22, killed after crashing into Route 66 sign in Barstow

BARSTOW, Calif. — Jorge Santander, 22, of Barstow was killed after fleeing from the scene of a crash and crashing into a cement Route 66 monument, officials said.

On March 17, 2018, at approximately 11:19 P.M., the Barstow Police Dispatch Center received a call for service regarding a vehicle that had just hit a parked car at the Eagles Lodge, located in the 500 block of East Main Street, and fled west bound on Main Street. The caller described the suspect vehicle as a red Trans Am.

As officers were dispatched to the area, a second caller reported that the suspect vehicle just struck another vehicle in the 300 block of East Main Street and that the driver was still in the vehicle.

As Sergeant Andrew Ellis and Officer Ruben Escalante arrived on scene, they observed that the suspect’s vehicle, a red Chevy Camaro, collided with the cement Route 66 monument located in the 300 block of East Main Street. The officers checked the driver and found him trapped inside the vehicle. The driver was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of this collision and the impact from the collision caused the drivers legs to become pinned under the steering wheel.

Barstow Fire Protection District firefighters and paramedics arrived on scene and used the “Jaws of Life” to cut open the driver’s door and free the driver. Paramedics treated the driver for his injuries and transported him to Barstow Community Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.

A Deputy from the San Bernardino County Coroner’s Department responded to Barstow Community Hospital and identified the driver of the vehicle as Jorge Santander, a resident of Barstow.

This Collison is still under investigation.
