Major Delays on Northbound I-15 Near Zzyzx After Truck Fire; Drivers Stranded in Extreme Heat
MOUNTAIN PASS, Calif. (VVNG.com) — A semi-truck fire is causing major delays and emergency responses on northbound Interstate 15 between Zzyzx Road and Kelbaker Road, with a 15-mile traffic backup and multiple reports of heat-related medical calls.
The incident began at approximately 12:52 p.m. on Monday, July 14, 2025, when a tractor-trailer carrying 25,000 pounds of tires caught fire on the right shoulder near mile marker 133.
According to a 5:29 p.m. update from the San Bernardino County Fire Department, units remain on scene battling the fire under extremely challenging conditions due to limited water sources and 120-degree heat.

“Limited water sources and 120-degree temperatures make conditions difficult,” officials said in a written statement. “The result is a major traffic issue on the 15 Freeway. Please consider alternate routes.”
All northbound lanes were initially shut down, and traffic was being diverted at Zzyzx Road. Many northbound motorists were also rerouted onto I-40 in Barstow to ease congestion.
As of late afternoon, multiple vehicles had overheated or broken down, and emergency responders were treating drivers for symptoms of heat exhaustion and possible heat stroke.

Firefighters requested water, Gatorade, and other supplies to assist stranded motorists.
CHP Barstow has since reopened the #1 (left) lane of northbound I-15. Traffic is now moving slowly through the median and left lane, while the #2 lane remains closed for continued firefighting and cleanup.
The previous closure at Zzyzx Road has been lifted, though CHP urges drivers to use caution and expect significant delays.
No injuries from the fire have been reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

UPDATE at 9:35 pm — Barstow CHP is reporting that all lanes are now open on the northbound I-15, north of Zzyzx Road. “Traffic may still be heavy for a little while, please use caution approaching the area,” stated CHP.
