Victorville, CA — Mayor Gloria Garcia awarded a Certificate of Recognition to Hannah Reynolds, a sixth grade student at Galileo Academy for winning the Annual City of Victorville’s Civil Rights Essay Contest during the Dec. 20, Victorville City Council meeting.
Hannah Reynolds’ winning essay about American Labor Leader and Civil Rights Activist, Cesar Chavez was written while a student in Jaely Meeks class at Galileo Academy and a portion of Reynolds’ essay will be displayed on a bronze plaque in the City’s Civil Rights Memorial and unveiled on March 31, 2018 – Cesar Chavez Day!
The Civil Rights Essay Contest is sponsored by The City of Victorville in collaboration with Victor Elementary School District. Students were asked to write about a U.S. Civil Rights Leader and explain why the leader should be honored within the City’s Civil Rights Memorial. Essays were evaluated on the basis of content, research, expression and originality.
Victor Elementary School District Superintendent, Jan Gonzales said, “We are very proud of Reynolds for choosing to ‘honor and remember’ the sacrifices made by Cesar Chavez to improve the lives of American farmworkers with her essay.” Gonzales later stated, “I would like to thank the City of Victorville for providing a platform for our students to research and learn about the rich history of American social justice and the civil rights activists that have improved the lives of millions throughout the United States.”
“I am pleased to recognize Reynolds for her winning essay about Cesar Chavez,” said Gloria Garcia, Mayor of Victorville. “The Council’s vision is to fill the Memorial with bronze plaques honoring Civil Rights Leaders who have contributed so greatly to our nation’s history.”
Reynolds’ winning essay will be published on the City of Victorville website at www.victorvilleca.gov.
