HESPERIA, CA – Busy schedules, the change in weather, and an abundance of joyful noise during the holidays can inadvertently create added stress for your four-legged friends at home. By keeping decorations, plants and foods out of reach, you can help to keep your pets safe this holiday season.
Keep these pet-safety tips in mind this holiday season:
· Holly, mistletoe and poinsettia are just a few of the plants that can be harmful and should be kept away from pets. Consider fake plants if you have inside pets.
· If you are having a holiday party, keep sweets, chocolate and alcohol out of the reach of pets. Consider placing pets in a safe area of the house away from the party so they do not accidentally ingest harmful substances.
· Despite being illegal, you may hear neighbors welcoming the New Year with fireworks. If your pet is sensitive to loud noises and fireworks, plan ahead by keeping your pet in a quiet room in your house. Remember that a pet will behave differently if panicked and may jump over fences and even through windows if scared.
· Make sure your pet has a license and ID, and consider a micro-chip that can identify your pet should it lose its collar.
If you find a lost pet, please call Animal Control to report it or take it to the closest shelter so that it is not running loose, this will give the pet its best chances to be reunited with its owner. If you discover that your pet is missing, the City of Hesperia encourages you to visit all of the local animal shelters daily to look for your lost pet. As a courtesy, the City of Hesperia posts pictures of many stray animals in the shelter on the City’s website at www.cityofhesperia.us/shelterpets. If your animal is pictured online, immediately call (760) 947-1700 or visit the shelter. The Hesperia Animal Shelter is located at 11011 Santa Fe Avenue and will be open regular business hours December 26, 27, 30 and 31.
