VICTORVILLE, Calif. – The City of Victorville today announced that it plans to improve two heavily-traveled roadways in the City. The road reconstruction and rehabilitation project will target approximately 7.3 miles of La Mesa and Amethyst Roads. City officials expect construction to begin no later than the end of April and finish by the end of July.
Improvements will be made to approximately three miles of La Mesa Road from El Rio to Cantina and four miles of Amethyst Road from Bear Valley Road to Mojave Drive. The roadways will be reconstructed, bike lanes will be installed, sidewalk ramps will be upgraded to new ADA standards, and existing storm drains will be reinforced. A three-mile stretch of bike lanes on Nisqualli Road from Hesperia Road to the I-15 will also be installed as part of the project that will go to bid by the end of this month.
The exact construction schedule won’t be known until the project is awarded, but City officials expect work at the busy intersections of La Mesa and Amethyst and Luna and Amethyst, near Liberty Elementary School and Discovery School of the Arts, to take place after the school-year ends in hopes of minimizing disruption to school-related traffic.
The City will also require that the winning contractor keep one lane of traffic open in each direction and all traffic signals fully operational between the hours of 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. every day for the duration of the project. Motorists will be encouraged to use alternate routes during construction.
The City will re-use and recycle as much of the existing roadway pavement as possible to save construction costs. The City’s contractor will fully-reconstruct the most deteriorated sections and use either a grind and overlay or slurry seal on sections that are in better shape.
These projects are part of the City’s five-year Capital Improvement Plan. Additional road improvements planned for 2017 include a slurry seal project to the area of Green Tree East, further paving on La Mesa Road from Cantina Drive to Pena, and a slurry seal and installation of bike lanes on Phantom East and West at the Southern California Logistics Airport. The City will also share costs with the County of San Bernardino to rehabilitate portions of Luna Road from Amargosa to Amethyst.
