Hesperia Man Arrested After Shooting Nephew

HESPERIA, Calif. (PRESS RELEASE) Authorities arrested James Martin, 59, a resident of Hesperia for assault with a deadly weapon after he shot his nephew in the leg, authorities said.

On Monday, May 15, 2017 at approximately 5:22 PM deputies with the Hesperia Sheriff Station were dispatched to Desert Valley Hospital in regards to a male being treated for a gunshot wound to his leg.

During the investigation, it was learned the original incident took place at a residence in the 11500 block of Hawthorne Avenue in Hesperia.

The victim and his uncle, James Martin, were at Martin’s residence when a verbal argument started. Martin produced a handgun and a physical struggle ensued. During the physical struggle, the handgun was discharged and the victim was struck in the leg.

The Specialized Enforcement Division (SED) assisted Hesperia Station Detectives in the service of a search warrant at Martin’s residence, but Martin was not located and a warrant was issued for his arrest for assault with a deadly weapon.

Several hours later, Martin and an unidentified female were contacted during a traffic stop in Victorville City where Martin was taken into custody without further incident. The unidentified female’s involvement in the case was unknown.

The victim was transported to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, where he was treated for a non-life threatening injury, and later released.
