BARSTOW, Calif. (VVNG.com) — California Highway Patrol officers from the Barstow Area helped rescue a severely malnourished horse after responding to a report from a concerned citizen about an abandoned animal in the desert.
According to a written statement from CHP-Barstow, officers located a frightened horse that was “severely malnourished” and had “clearly been neglected.”
The agency said the horse initially kept her distance, appearing unsure whether she could trust anyone.
“One of our officers patiently waited with her, speaking softly and offering an apple. Little by little, her fear turned into trust. She finally allowed the officer to pet her, and in that moment, it became clear she wasn’t just another call for service—she was a life that deserved a second chance,” stated CHP officials.
CHP officers then contacted a local horse rescue organization, and the horse was safely relocated to a rescue facility in Apple Valley, where she was placed into caring hands.
CHP-Barstow said, “Thanks to one person’s decision to make a phone call and the compassion shown by responding officers, this beautiful horse now has the opportunity for the future she deserves.”
The agency also thanked both the Good Samaritan who reported the horse and its local rescue partners.
“Every call matters. Every act of kindness matters. And sometimes, one small act can save a life,” the statement said.
CHP-Barstow encouraged the public to report animals in distress, noting that compassion and timely reporting can make a life-saving difference.
