
Fontana Sheriff’s Deputy involved in a shooting. Deputy is not injured, suspect is hospitalized and expected to survive.
According to a press release, “On Tuesday, June 18, 2013, at approximately 11:25 p.m., a Deputy from the Fontana Station conducted a traffic enforcement stop on a vehicle for California Vehicle Code violation 22450(a), Failure to stop at a stop sign, at the intersection of Beech Avenue and Athol Street.
The deputy contacted and identified the driver as Chad Bryan Johnson. Johnson was discovered to be on active parole with parole search terms. While conducting a search of Johnson’s person the deputy located a handgun in the front of Johnson’s waistband. Johnson resisted as the deputy attempted to handcuff him reaching toward his waistband where the handgun was located. Fearing Johnson was attempting to retrieve the weapon, the deputy fired his duty weapon one time striking Johnson. Johnson was transported to a local area hospital where he is expected to survive. The deputy was not injured during the incident.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, Specialized Investigations Division, Homicide Detail was requested and responded to conduct the investigation.
