DEVORE, Calif. (VVNG.com) — Firefighters are battling the fast-moving Rex Fire Friday afternoon near Glen Helen Parkway and Cajon Boulevard, close to the Interstate 15 and Interstate 215 freeway interchange in Devore.
The vegetation fire was first reported at approximately 2:32 p.m. on Friday, May 22, 2026.
According to initial reports, the fire started in a wash and spread rapidly through heavy fuels. As of 3:00 p.m., firefighters reported active fire behavior and smoke visible throughout the area. The latest update indicated the fire was holding at approximately 5 acres.
Cal Fire San Bernardino Unit (BDU) said a large urban camper population in the area is currently under evacuation as crews continue working to contain the fire and protect nearby areas.
Air support could be seen overhead assisting ground crews with firefighting efforts as firefighters worked to slow the fire’s spread.
Traffic on northbound Interstate 15 through the Cajon Pass is also experiencing extremely heavy congestion for miles due to a combination of Friday afternoon rush hour traffic and increased Memorial Day weekend travel.
Additional details regarding containment, injuries, structures threatened, or road closures have not yet been released.
This is a developing story, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
