PINON HILLS, Calif. – A father was killed last night on Highway 138, nearly a year after his son was killed in a traffic collision on the same highway.
The pedestrian killed was identified as Melvin Boyd Chivas, 51, of Pinon Hills, according to the San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office.
It happened on Monday night at 10:41 pm., while Chivas was walking eastbound on SR-138 in the middle of the eastbound lane of traffic, stated a California Highway Patrol news release.
A 51-year-old Fontana man was driving in a 2002 Chevy Suburban eastbound on SR-138, west of Mountain Road at approximately 65 MPH when he observed a pedestrian in the roadway.
Authorities said the driver attempted to stop his SUV, however, he was unable to do so before striking Chivas. CHP officers responded to the scene and immediately began treating the pedestrian. Despite life-saving measures, Chivas succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.
At this time, it is not believed alcohol and/or drug consumption was a factor in this collision.
On September 5, 2016, Melvin’s then 21-year-old son, Justin Chivas, was killed in a head-on traffic collision that claimed a total of two lives on Highway 138.
Anyone with information regarding the collision can contact Officer M. Blackwood with the Victorville CHP Station at 760-241-1186.
