
According to a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s news release, “On July 20, 2013 at about 7:58 am, Deputies from the Hesperia Station and rescue personnel from the San Bernardino County Fire Department responded to a vehicle vs. pedestrian traffic collision in the intersection of Smoke Tree Street and Third Avenue in Hesperia. Upon arrival, Deputies found the elderly female victim down in the roadway suffering from major injuries. The driver of the involved vehicle, a 2010 Nissan Versa was not injured. The victim Leovijalda Ramirez, A 69 year old female, Hesperia resident was flown to a valley area trauma center for treatment, however on July 21st she died from her injuries.
The Hesperia Station Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) responded to conduct the investigation. It was determined that the driver of the Nissan was traveling southbound on Third Ave., at an undetermined speed when the victim and a male companion walking east attempted to cross Third Ave. on Smoke Tree St., directly in front of the vehicle. The male companion of the victim began to cross when he saw the vehicle and successfully cleared the southbound lane of traffic, however the female was not able to cross all the lanes and was struck in the southbound lane.
Both Smoke Tree St. and Third Ave. were closed for approximately 4 hours while investigators processed the scene for evidence. The collision is still under investigation by the Hesperia Station Traffic Division MAIT Investigators and the exact cause of the collision is pending.
