Family Mourns Mother of Four Murdered by Boyfriend in Apple Valley; Suspect Still at Large

APPLE VALLEY, Calif. — A local family is grieving the loss of a mother of four, identified as Sommer Kelly, a 40-year-old resident of Apple Valley, who was shot and killed by her boyfriend. Her daughter was also attacked and suffered three gunshot wounds.

The Tragic Incident

In the early hours of January 30, 2024, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies from the Apple Valley Station responded to a distressing call from the 20600 block of Waalew Road, at the Los Ranchos Mobile Home Park.

Reports of shots fired led law enforcement to the scene, where they discovered the body of 40-year-old Sommer Kelly. Kelly suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the location.

Sommer’s 18-year-old daughter was also found at the scene, critically wounded with gunshot injuries. She was rushed to a trauma center, where she remains in stable condition.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division – Homicide Detail swiftly took charge of the investigation.

Their probe quickly pointed to Clint Edward Griffith, a 51-year-old male resident of Apple Valley, as the primary suspect. Griffith, identified as Kelly’s boyfriend, had fled the scene.

An arrest warrant has now been issued for Griffith, whose whereabouts are currently unknown, sparking a manhunt by the authorities.

The Apple Valley Police Department is working closely with the Homicide Detail, and they are asking the public for any information related to Griffith’s location or the case as a whole.

Mourning and Support

While officials have not yet provided specific details regarding the motive, a nearby resident reported overhearing an argument from the house on the previous evening.

Amidst the ongoing investigation, the community has gathered to support the bereaved family. Sommer Kelly was a devoted mother, leaving behind four children, including one who is autistic. The ripple effects of this tragedy are felt deeply, as family members grapple with not only the loss but also the future care of the children.

Sommer’s sister, Brandy Tarin, has created a GoFundMe to aid the family during this difficult time:

“It is with heavy hearts that I have to be on here today making this GoFundMe page. My older sister Sommer Kelly age 40 was murdered today Jan. 30, 2024. Sommer’s eldest daughter, my niece, which is 18 years old, was also shot 3 times after trying to interfere and help her mom and now is being treated at Loma Linda Trauma Center. Sommer leaves behind 4 children, one who is autistic. 3 of the children were in the home and witnessed this horrible tragedy. My mother is mourning the loss of her oldest daughter, so I’m trying my best to help her out. My mother is 65 on SSI and will now need to take Guardianship of the three younger children. No mother should have to bury their children. I’m reaching out to anyone and everyone that can help make things somewhat easier as we go through the next few weeks in putting my sister to rest and making sure all the children are safe and comfortable! We appreciate any help given. Thank you all so much!”
