Drunken driver causes multiple crashes; Hits Motorcycle Head-on in Hesperia

HESPERIA, Calif. (VVNG.com) A drunken Adelanto man caused at least five car crashes Saturday night that ended when he struck a motorcycle head-on, officials said.

Deputies responded about 10:30 p.m. to multiple calls regarding separate crashes on the 15 Freeway between Bear Valley Road and Main Street and then received more calls referencing crashes on the city streets.

“We believe the driver caused several accidents on the southbound 15 freeway before he exited and caused several more along Main Street,” Victorville CHP Sgt. Medina said.

The freeway was at a near standstill as CHP officers took reports on the various crashes, including one SUV that rolled over.

Simultaneously, deputies were taking reports for at least two other crashes, including a motorcycle that was hit head-on by the Hispanic male driver of a white Honda, who officials said showed visible signs of intoxication.

“I was leaving the Ross store on Main Street and saw the white Honda exit the freeway and hit a curb,” said 21-year-old Jonathan Santa Ana.

Jonathan said he felt something was not right, and as he witnessed the driver traveling eastbound on Main Street, he said that’s when things took a turn for the worst.

“I saw him crash into a Nissan Titan and then he backed up and drove the wrong way up Main Street,” Jonathan said.

As the suspect drove westbound in the eastbound lanes of Main Street, he struck a motorcyclist head-on.

After the reckless suspect had driven away from the crash, Jonathan said he didn’t want anyone else to get hurt, so he tried to stop him.

“As he turned on Mariposa Road myself and others stopped him, and then my brother and another person managed to pull the keys out of the ignition,” Jonathan said he then tackled the driver as he tried to flee. “I held him in a chokehold, and my brother stood on his legs until the police got here.”

Although Jonathan and others put their life on the line, they all agreed they did it to protect innocent people from being killed.

The man was taken into custody and will be facing a multitude of charges, including felony hit and run and felony DUI, officials said.

A passenger who fled from the suspect’s car was arrested at a nearby motel.

At least seven people were injured, including the motorcyclist who sustained critical injuries and was taken to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center. All victims are expected to recover from their injuries.
