Driver Detained on Suspicion of DUI After SUV Overturns Into Fire Hydrant, Causes Sinkhole in Victorville

VICTORVILLE, Calif. (VVNG.com) — A female driver was detained on suspicion of driving under the influence after her vehicle overturned multiple times and crashed into a fire hydrant Friday morning on Hesperia Road in Victorville.
The crash was reported on Friday, March 13, 2026, at about 11:45 a.m., near Hesperia Road and Ottawa Street.
According to preliminary information, a silver 2006 Nissan Murano occupied by an adult female driver and two small children was traveling on Hesperia Road when, for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle overturned multiple times and struck a fire hydrant on the northbound side of the roadway.
The impact caused the hydrant to rupture, sending gallons of water gushing across the roadway and creating a sinkhole around the overturned vehicle, which came to rest on its roof and became partially submerged in water and dirt.

Thankfully, all occupants were able to exit the vehicle safely.
Deputies at the scene conducted field sobriety tests on the female driver, who was later handcuffed and placed into the back of a patrol vehicle on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
As of 1:15 p.m., Hesperia Road remained closed in both directions for an unknown duration as officials continued their investigation.

Authorities were also working to determine the size of the sinkhole and assess the stability of the surrounding area.
This is a developing story, and additional information will be updated as it becomes available.
