BARSTOW, Calif. (VVNG.com) — A 70-year-old man and his 62-year-old female passenger, both residents of Ridgecrest, CA were killed in a head-on collision on caused by unsafe passing, officials said.
On Thursday, March 29, 2018, at about 7:28 am, Officers with the California Highway Patrol responded to a traffic collision on US-395, approximately 20 miles north of State Route 58.
Officers arrived and located a Ford F-150 and a Toyota Sienna with major damage along the right shoulder of the highway.
The male and female occupants of the Toyota sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash. The driver of the Ford, a 48-year-old male from Fullerton, CA sustained major injuries and was transported to by air to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center.
Through investigation, CHP officers determined the Toyota was traveling southbound on 395 and the Ford was heading south.
“As the driver of the Ford approached a crest in the roadway, he initiated an unsafe pass by crossing the solid yellow line delineating the northbound lane. The Ford entered the southbound lane in the direct path of the Toyota. Both the Ford and Toyota attempted to avoid a collision by driving to the west shoulder of US-395 where they collided head-on,” stated a CHP news release.
The Barstow CHP is continuing to investigate the collision and said alcohol and/or drugs are not believed to be a contributing factor in this collision.

The month of March has seen many horrific and often deadly traffic collisions along the US-395 corridor in the Victor Valley, claiming 5 lives and leaving 4 others critically injured.
On March 1, 2018, two men were critically injured and airlifted after a head-on crash on Highway 395, just north of Sycamore Street in Victorville. There has been no recent update on their condition. CHP officials said the crash was caused by unsafe passing.
On March 3, 2018, a pedestrian identified as Genaro Garcia Huesca, 42, of Victorville was walking along Highway 395, near Seneca Road when he was struck by a vehicle heading southbound. He was killed as a result of his injuries and no arrest has been made in his death.
On March 20, 2018, two drivers were killed in a head-on crash on Highway 395 near mile marker 20.5. CHP said the crash was caused by elevated speed and unsafe passing over double yellow lines. The drivers killed were identified as Leslie Doss, 39, of Victorville and Timothy Ellis, 36, of Helendale.
On March 24, 2018, a man and a woman were airlifted to trauma centers following a crash on Highway 395, one mile south of State Route 58. A 38-year-old male and a 27-year-old female from Hesperia were airlifted to trauma centers. There has been no recent update on their condition. CHP said the crash was caused by unsafe driving.
