Daylight Saving Time Ends This Weekend: Clocks ‘Fall Back’ One Hour

CALIFORNIA (VVNG.com) — Residents across the state will gain an extra hour of sleep this weekend as daylight saving time (DST) officially ends on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at 2:00 a.m. Clocks should be turned back one hour before going to bed Saturday night.

Daylight saving time, which began on March 9, 2025, is the biannual time change practiced in most of the United States.

The “fall back” in November and “spring forward” in March are designed to make better use of natural daylight during the evenings.

The idea dates back to Benjamin Franklin, who suggested in 1784 that waking earlier could save on candle usage. However, modern DST was first implemented in the U.S. during World War I to conserve fuel.

The Uniform Time Act of 1966 standardized the practice, though states can opt out, Hawaii and most of Arizona do not observe DST.

While many look forward to the extra hour of sleep, the transition can still disrupt sleep patterns and daily routines. Experts recommend several strategies to ease the adjustment:

  • Gradually shift your sleep schedule by 15-30 minutes a few days ahead of the change.
  • Avoid caffeine and screens before bedtime.
  • Maximize daylight exposure, especially in the morning, to help reset your internal clock.
  • Keep a consistent sleep and wake schedule, even on weekends.

The next time change, when clocks “spring forward,” is scheduled for Sunday, March 8, 2026.
