Coroner ID’s 2nd driver killed in D Street crash as 62-year-old Phelan man

VICTORVILLE, Calif. ( — The San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office has identified the second driver killed in a Victorville crash Tuesday night as Paul Alexander Friend, age 62, a resident of Phelan.

On Tuesday, December 3, 2019, at 10:41 p.m., witnesses called 911 reporting a traffic collision in front of the Iron Horse Mobile Home and RV Park located on the 16300 block of D Street.

According to the Victorville Police Department, Friend was driving west on D Street in a white pickup truck when he was struck head-on by a minivan.

“It was determined the driver of the minivan (David Ponciano Lopez, 28-year old Victorville resident) was traveling east on D Street and for unknown reasons crossed over the raised concrete center median into oncoming traffic, colliding head-on with the pickup truck,” the Victorville Police confirmed in a press release.

Both drivers succumbed to their injuries at the scene.

“I am so heart broken. Paul was rough, and could fix anything, often driving hours to help a friend fix their car or truck,” Riley stated. “ He also helped all those dogs and cats Margot brought home from her newspaper routes, just abandoned or hurt in the dark.”

According to Riley, Friend’s wife Margot had died of cancer a week before the tragic accident and was on his way back from making funeral arrangements of his wife when the minivan struck head-on.
